Prosthetic & Animatronic Effects
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Jeff Farley spent his early years reading FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND and sneaking downstairs in the middle of the night while his family was sleeping to catch any horror or science fiction movie he could. He also used any free moment to hang around such effects technicians as Dennis Muren, David Allen, Jim Danforth and FAMOUS MONSTERS editor, Forrest J. Ackerman.
A veteran of the film industry for 30 years, his first feature was 1977's KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS. This lucky break was due to his friendship with Ackerman. Jeff was invited to FJA’s for a meeting with Ray Harryhausen one evening and due to good timing, Jeff was introduced to Douglas Barrett Jones, who a couple of weeks later asked Jeff to help out on this William Shatner starring tale of nature gone amok.
Jeff spent the next ten years gaining valuable experience assisting on commercials for CPC Associates and such productions as Danny DeVito’s directing debut, THE RATINGS GAME in 1984. 1986's THE TWILIGHT ZONE episode, GRAMMA and THE STEPFORD CHILDREN for NBC followed and in 1987 Jeff joined the productions, THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW, SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE 2 and MOONWALKER. He also spent a year at John Buechler’s MMI working on films for Empire Pictures such as PRISON, CELLAR DWELLER, DEADLY WEAPON, GHOST TOWN and traveling to Italy for ARENA. Other shops/individuals he’s worked for include; Ed French, ADI, Lance Anderson, Screaming Mad George, Optic Nerve Studios, Michele Burke and MEL to name a few.
Jeff has also had extensive foreign location experience in Japan, Mexico, Romania and Bulgaria.
Other credits include: STAN LEE’S LIGHTSPEED, AS GOOD AS IT GETS, 24, PUPPET MASTER VS. DEMONIC TOYS, NATIONAL LAMPOON’S VAN WILDER, ICE CRAWLERS, TOMBSTONE, DEATH BECOMES HER, DEMOLITION MAN , WILLIAM SHATNER’S FULL MOON FRIGHT NIGHT, PARASOMNIA, SCARY MOVIE 2 , BONES, EXPIRED, BABYLON 5 (seasons 4 & 5) and THE BLOB.
Two notable achievements in Jeff’s career were 1995's WING COMMANDER 4-THE PRICE OF FREEDOM (the first Video Game shot on 35mm) and BABYLON-5 IN THE BEGINNING, which garnered Jeff a 1998 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Makeup for a Series.
Jeff currently runs OBSCURE ARTIFACTS, providing makeup effects and prop services for the production community. The 1500 sq ft., full service studio is equipped to provide quality results, from design to finished product.
